  • Do not overmix the batter to keep the donuts tender.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I make these donuts without sour cream?

Yes! You can substitute sour cream with plain Greek yogurt or a dairy-free alternative like coconut yogurt for a similar texture and taste.

How do I store leftover donuts?

Store them in an airtight container at room temperature for up to two days. For longer storage, refrigerate for up to a week or freeze for up to three months.

How do I prevent my donuts from absorbing too much oil?

Ensure your oil is at the correct temperature (around 350°F). If the oil is too cold, the donuts will absorb excess grease, making them heavy and soggy.

Gluten-Free Old-Fashioned Donuts

These gluten-free old-fashioned donuts are crispy on the outside, soft on the inside, and coated in a deliciously sweet glaze—just like the classic version, but without the gluten!

Servings: 12

Keywords:

  • Prep Time: 1 hours 20 mins
  • Cook Time: 25 mins
  • Total Time: 1 hours 45 mins

Ingredients

Instructions

Ingredients

  • 2 1/4 cups gluten-free baking flour
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons baking powder
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 1/2 cup sugar
  • 2 tablespoons butter, room temperature
  • 2 large egg yolks
  • 1/2 cup sour cream
  • Canola oil, for frying

For the glaze:

  • 3 cups powdered sugar, sifted
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1/3 cup hot water

Instructions

  1. In a medium bowl, whisk together the gluten-free flour, baking powder, salt, and nutmeg.
  2. In a large mixing bowl, beat the butter and sugar together until it reaches a sandy consistency. Add the egg yolks and mix until the texture becomes light and thick.
  3. Gradually add the dry ingredients in three additions, alternating with the sour cream. Mix until a smooth but slightly sticky dough forms.
  4. Cover the dough with plastic wrap and refrigerate for about an hour until firm.
  5. Lightly flour a surface and roll the dough out to 1/2-inch thickness. Use a donut cutter or two differently sized biscuit cutters to cut out the donuts and holes.
  6. Heat 2 inches of canola oil in a heavy-bottomed pot to 325°F. Carefully place a few donuts at a time in the oil, frying for about 2 minutes per side or until golden brown.
  7. Remove from the oil and drain on a paper towel-lined plate.

For the glaze:

  1. In a medium bowl, whisk together the powdered sugar, salt, vanilla extract, and hot water until smooth.
  2. Dip each warm donut into the glaze, then place on a wire rack to set.
  3. Let the glaze set for 20 minutes before serving.
