How Important Is Consistency in Exercise? The Key to Lasting Results

Why Consistency Matters More Than Intensity


What is the best exercise program for you? That is a question that all trainees ask at some point. The answer is easy (in theory)! The best plan for you is the plan you will stick with. In practice, this can be hard. But consistency is key for long-term health benefits and success in exercise. 

Research is quite clear that regular physical activity increases longevity and reduces the risk of chronic illnesses. Furthermore, regular vigorous physical activity confers a protective benefit beyond that of less-intense activity. Even sporadic practice of intense physical activity- think of the stereotypical “weekend warrior”- has been shown to benefit men (at least those without major coronary risk factors). That said, regular exercise most days of the week, including at least some intense activity, is associated with the lowest mortality risk.

So, what is the threshold for intense work? Epidemiologists have used a guideline of ≥6 METs, or working at 6x your resting metabolic rate, to define “intense” activity. While that is a precise definition, it is useless for the layperson. A more practical & personal definition of intense activity is any exercise that tires you out in about 15-20 minutes. As you might guess, there is considerable individual variation in this threshold. The pace I could keep for 20 minutes would be much lower than that of my students who are cross-country runners. And that is as it should be, because the intensity of exercise is relative to your current fitness state.

In an ideal world, you figure out an exercise plan you can stick with. Ideally, this plan will get you to expend ~2000kcal/week and include at least 1-2 days of intense exercise. How that looks is entirely up to you! 

Common Barriers to Exercise Consistency

Everyone knows that exercise is good for them, but relatively few people exercise regularly. According to the CDC, about 25% of American adults are sedentary. Why is this?

Research examining the common barriers to exercise has identified several commonly cited issues, including:

In contrast, a scoping review identified many key predictors of adherence to regular exercise. They included

  • Characteristics of the exercise program: a plan individualized to the needs and interests of the individual*
  • Supervision: i.e., a teacher, coach, or personal trainer to whom one is accountable
  • Technology: using fitness trackers can be helpful, IF the individual enjoys using them
  • Participants’ education: adequate expectations and knowledge about risks and benefits of exercise - the more people buy into the potential benefits of exercise, the more likely they are to stick with the plan
  • Enjoyment and absence of unpleasant experiences: this is where one has to be careful with the amount of intense exercise you have in the plan, as intense exercise can be unpleasant
  • Integration in daily living: anything that reduces the burden of exercise in terms of financial or time costs is incredibly helpful
  • Social support and relatedness: feelings of comfort in the exercise setting buoyed by family, peers, or exercise staff 
  • Self-efficacy and competence: one’s feeling of confidence in their ability to perform and succeed in exercise*
  • Participant’s active role: giving people an active role in self-management and self-monitoring*
  • Goal setting: setting specific, measurable, achievable, realistic, relevant, and timed goals, with limiting or avoiding uncontrollable goals such as weight loss* 
Note that I put an asterisk* around several of these predictors.  In my opinion, these could all be grouped under the umbrella of giving one a sense of “ownership” over their fitness plan. The sense of ownership and the ability to chart your own course on your fitness journey are integral to sticking with the plan.

To boil it down simply: Find a way to move that you think is fun. Move most days of the week and move with vigor at least a few times a week. Make the movement fit seamlessly into your day’s routine. And above all, have fun with it!

FAQs

Is it better to exercise every day or work out intensely a few times a week?

Both consistency and intensity have benefits, but consistency is the foundation of a successful exercise routine. Regular movement throughout the week supports cardiovascular health, strength, mobility, and long-term adherence. Adding one or two higher-intensity workouts each week, when appropriate for your fitness level, can provide additional health and fitness benefits.

How long should I exercise to improve my health?

Current physical activity guidelines recommend that adults aim for at least 150 minutes of moderate-intensity or 75 minutes of vigorous-intensity aerobic activity each week, along with muscle-strengthening activities on two or more days per week. Even short bouts of physical activity throughout the day can contribute toward these goals and improve overall health.

What if I don't enjoy traditional workouts?

You don't have to spend hours in a gym to be physically active. Walking, dancing, swimming, hiking, cycling, gardening, recreational sports, or even active household chores all count as movement. The best exercise program is one that you genuinely enjoy and can maintain over time, making consistency much easier.

Why is consistency more important than intensity?

Regular physical activity provides cumulative benefits that build over time. While occasional high-intensity workouts can improve fitness, exercising consistently helps establish healthy habits, lower the risk of chronic disease, improve energy and mood, and make long-term progress more sustainable. Finding an enjoyable routine that fits your lifestyle is often more effective than pursuing an overly ambitious program that is difficult to maintain.
