A Gut-Friendly Take on Chinese Chicken Salad
Chinese chicken salad is a beloved classic - crisp cabbage, tender chicken, crunchy noodles, and a tangy-sweet dressing all in one bowl. But for those managing GERD, IBS, or general digestive sensitivity, that same combination of raw cruciferous veggies, spicy chili oil, and acidic dressing can turn a favorite dish into a source of discomfort. The good news is that this salad doesn't have to be off the table.
With a few thoughtful adjustments, you can keep all the flavor and crunch you love while tailoring the spice level, acidity, and ingredients to what your body actually tolerates. That flexibility makes this recipe practical: it comes together quickly, requires minimal cooking, and works just as well for a busy weeknight dinner as it does for a grab-and-go lunch after a morning of school drop-offs, meetings, or shuttling kids to soccer practice.
Description of Ingredients and Why They Work
Substitutions and Variations
- Cabbage alternatives for those sensitive to raw cruciferous veggies: lightly steamed cabbage or swap spinach, arugula, and romaine.
- Low-FODMAP swaps: garlic-infused oil instead of raw garlic, scallion tops instead of bulbs.
- Dressing modifications for GERD: reducing citrus/vinegar acidity by eliminating canned orange slices or reducing the amount of rice wine vinegar or using low-fat dressing bases like low-fat Greek yogurt.
- Crunch alternatives to fried wonton strips: swap toasted seeds or baked wonton strips.
