GERD-Friendly Peach and Cottage Cheese Breakfast Bowl: A Light, Low-Acid Start

As the weather warms up and summer vacations are being planned, this is the perfect time to bring those delicious summer flavors into your breakfast. Not only is this bowl nutritious, but it also keeps you fuller longer than a quick protein coffee in the morning. I promise this bowl takes less than five minutes to prepare.

Why This Bowl Works

  • High in protein to keep you full
  • Fiber-rich from fruit and granola
  • Naturally gluten-free
  • Highlights fresh summer produce like peaches
  • Quick to assemble with no cooking needed

Ingredients Needed

  • Cottage cheese, your preferred fat content
  • Fresh ripe peaches or canned peaches
  • Gluten-free granola, either homemade or your favorite brand
  • Unsweetened shredded or toasted coconut
  • Optional add-ins such as honey, mint, or chia seeds

Tips for the Best Flavor

  • For the best flavor, choose fresh peaches over canned when possible. When selecting a fresh peach, make sure it is slightly soft to the touch, as firm peaches are not fully ripe and will lack sweetness.
  • Toasting coconut brings out a naturally sweet and nutty flavor that elevates the entire bowl.
  • When choosing a gluten-free granola, look for one with less than 5 grams of added sugar since this bowl already contains natural sweetness from the peaches and coconut.
  • Adjust the sweetness to your preference. If you enjoy a sweeter bowl, consider adding a drizzle of maple syrup or honey.

Variations and Substitutions

  • Swap peaches for mango, berries, or pineapple to keep the summer flavors
  • Add nuts or seeds for extra crunch
  • For more creaminess, add a splash of coconut milk or blend the cottage cheese
  • Use coconut yogurt for a dairy-free option

Nutrition Snapshot

  • High in protein
  • Balanced in carbohydrates, fats, and fiber
  • Great for light appetites or gentle morning digestion

How to Meal Prep It

  • Store each component separately
  • Slice peaches ahead of time
  • Pre-portion cottage cheese into containers
  • Perfect for a quick grab-and-go breakfast or snack

FAQs

Is cottage cheese safe for people with GERD?

Many people with GERD tolerate cottage cheese well because it is relatively low in acid and provides a good source of protein. However, tolerance varies from person to person. If full-fat dairy tends to trigger your symptoms, consider choosing a lower-fat cottage cheese option and monitor your individual response.

Why are peaches considered a good fruit choice for acid reflux?

Peaches are generally lower in acid than citrus fruits and can be a refreshing option for people managing reflux. They also provide fiber, vitamins, and natural sweetness without relying on highly acidic ingredients that may trigger symptoms in some individuals.

How can I make this breakfast bowl more filling?

To increase satiety, try adding chia seeds, hemp seeds, chopped nuts, or a slightly larger serving of cottage cheese. These additions provide extra protein, fiber, and healthy fats that may help keep you satisfied longer throughout the morning.

Can I prepare this breakfast bowl ahead of time?

Yes. For the best texture, store the cottage cheese, peaches, granola, and toppings separately and assemble them just before eating. This helps keep the granola crunchy and prevents excess moisture from making the bowl soggy.

Is this breakfast bowl good for gut health?

This bowl can support digestive health by providing protein, fiber, and nutrient-rich whole foods. Choosing peaches, adding fiber-rich toppings like chia seeds, and including a moderate amount of granola may help support regular digestion while remaining gentle for many individuals with acid reflux.
